Getting your car ready for winter
Before the frosty winds of winter cause the temperature to drop, take time to prepare
your car for winter.
Begin by giving your car a major checkup, starting with a tune-upespecially if
its been a year or more since your auto had one. Then, check the following:
Battery
Cold temperatures really test your cars starting ability. If the battery is weak, it
may not be able to overcome old and dirty spark plugs, shorting ignition wires, thick oil
and stiff bearings. Check the battery and replace it if necessary.
Oil
Your engine will last longer and give you less trouble if you change the oil regularly.
Even with more sophisticated lubricating products, every 3,000 to 5,000 miles is still a
good interval.
Fuel tank
Keep your gas tank as full as possible during the winter months to prevent water from
entering the tank and freezing in the fuel lines. You may also want to buy some gasoline
antifreeze and use it as directed by the manufacturer.
Antifreeze
If you havent replaced the antifreeze in your cars radiator in more than two
years, you should change it before winter arrives.
Wipers/washers
New windshield wipers are a must for the snow, slush and salty spray of winter. Also, fill
the windshield washer reservoir with washer fluid designed to withstand freezing
temperatures.
Tires
Make sure the tread is appropriate for winter driving. All-season radials work well in
snow, but snow tires are even better. And, remember to make sure your tire pressure is
okay. With every ten degree drop in temperature, your tires air pressure drops one
pound.
Trunk
Carry a bag of salt, jumper cables, shovel, tire chains or strap chains, blankets or
sleeping bags, spare winter clothing, non-perishable food items, tools, and windshield
scraper and brush. These items could prove to be lifesavers in the event of severe winter
weather.
