Do you know how to file an insurance claim?

If your car is involved in an accident or damaged some other way, or your home is hit by fire or water damage, or your business suffers a loss of some type, put your insurance to work for you quickly by following these steps:

  1. Contact your insurance company. Do it as soon as possible, even if you’re far from home and even if someone else is responsible for the damage. If you’re insured by Harleysville or one of its subsidiaries, call our central claims unit at (800) 892-8877 any time of the day or night. Most of the time, we’ll be able to resolve your claim during that phone call. When specialized assistance is necessary, we’ll put you in touch with an adjuster from one of our regional claims centers to handle your case.
  2. Supply the information your insurance company needs. Give the company any legal papers your receive in connection with your loss.
  3. Keep records of your expenses. The cost of renting a car to replace your damaged auto or staying in a hotel after your home has been destroyed by fire may be reimbursed by your policy.
  4. Keep copies of all your paperwork. Store the copies in your own files. You may need to refer to them later.

If you’re involved in an auto accident, take these steps at the scene:

Write down your version of the accident, including all injuries and damages, and obtain the names of others involved in the accident and the names of their insurance companies.

  • Don’t admit to being at fault; simply provide the facts.
  • Get the names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses.
  • Cooperate fully with the police investigating the accident.
