What should you do after a disaster?

Should you ever be the victim of a natural disaster, insurance can help you bear at least part of the added financial burden it brings. Here are some guidelines that will make things easier for both you and your insurance adjuster if you ever need to file a claim after a catastrophe.

Don’t alter the condition of damaged property. But do take the steps necessary to protect it from further damage.

Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible. Don’t assume he or she knows about your loss. Give your agent all the information you can. If you can’t reach your agent, call your insurance company directly. Follow up your phone call with a written explanation.

Make a list of damaged and destroyed property. Your adjuster will be able to work more quickly if he or she has a written list to work from. Photos of damage are also helpful.

Keep records and receipts of expenses you incur. If you need to purchase tarps to protect your damaged roof, or if you must stay in a hotel because your house is unlivable, those expenses may be covered.

Be patient. Once you report your claim, you adjuster will get to you as quickly as possible. After a catastrophe, however, travel through damaged areas and heavy traffic may be more difficult than usual.
